CAVITAZIONE = Effetto sonoro e idrodinamico che si verifica quando il sottomarino si muove ad eccessiva velocità in relazione alla profondità: l'elica che spinge il mezzo produce grosse e rumorose bolle di vapore acqueo che permettono in modo praticamente immediato il rilevamento del sottomarino da parte di altre unità in ascolto. Davvero dannosa se si intende rimanere silenziosi. Fra l'altro, la cavitazione danneggia l'elica.

CAVITATION = Sound and idrodinamic effect which is active when the submarine moves too fast in relation with depht: the propeller moving the unit produces big and loud bubbles of steam allowing the submarine to be relieved by other units which are listening. Very dangerous if you want to stay silent. Also, cavitation damages propeller.

IVAN IL MATTO = Manovra diversiva adottata dai sovietici: dato che in tutti i sottomarini i rilevamenti sonar su un piccolo settore angolare a poppavia, una sorta di zona d'ombra, sono molto limitati ed imprecisi a causa del rumore prodotto dalle eliche del mezzo stesso, la manovra viene eseguita virando di colpo su un lato in modo da rilevare immediatamente unità che eventualmente seguivano il mezzo in questione.

IVAN THE MAD = Sovietic diversion maneuvre: sonar surveys are limited and inaccurated because there is a sort of shadow area on the stern in all the submarines due to the propeller movement, so this maneuvre is done veering improvvisely on a side to relieve immediately the units possibly following the submarine.

NODO = Unità di misura della velocità in campo nautico; equivale ad un miglio marino (1,852 m) all'ora.

KNOT = speed measurement unit in nautic environments; it is equivalent to the marine mile (1,852 m) for hour.

POLINIA o POLARSTAGNO = Regioni molto limitate della banchisa artica che permettono, per il loro relativamente piccolo spessore, ai sottomarini di riemergere spaccando l'area della banchisa e permettendo dunque al proprio equipaggio di non rimanere intrappolato sotto i ghiacci.

POLARPOND = Limited regions of arctic ice pack allowing, due to their thin thickness, submarines to surface breaking the ice pack area, so the crew could avoid to be entraped under ice.

SNORKELING = L'atto durante il quale un sommergibile diesel-elettrico si mette in comunicazione con la superficie tramite un condotto aeraulico. Ed è in questa fase che un sottomarino è svantaggiato poiché può essere facilmente individuato. Lo s. ad esempio è indispendabile sui Kilo, diesel-elettrici, ma non sui nucleari Los Angeles.

SNORKELING = The process during which a diesel-electric submarine is linked to surface through an air tube. During this phase the unit is disadvantaged because it can be easily located. S. for example is indispensable on the Kilo, diesel-electric, not on the nuclear Los Angeles.

SONAR = SOund NAvigation Ranging. Una delle parti fondamentali della struttura del mezzo subacqueo. Il s. può essere passivo o attivo: il primo, molto sensibile, si basa su rilevamenti appunto passivi del bersaglio ascoltando i rumori irradiati da quest'ultimo. Il s. attivo invece, che fornisce dati grazie alla riflessione delle onde sonore da parte del bersaglio, si basa su impulsi, singoli o multipli, che offrono rilevamenti molto precisi ma che tuttavia rendono nota la propria posizione.

SONAR = SOund NAvigation Ranging. One of the most important part of the submarine structure. The s. could be passive or active: the first, very sensitive, is so based on passive surveys of the target listening to its radiated sounds. The active s. instead, giving datas thanks to the reflection of sound waves from the target, is based on pulses, single or multiple, offering precise surveys, but that make known the position.

SOSUS = SOund Sourveillance Under the Sea. Si tratta della fittissima rete di piccole apparecchiature sonar disposte sul fondo dei mari e degli oceani che permettono alle forze militari americane di rilevare eventuali unità marine.

SOSUS = SOund Sourveillance Under the Sea. It is a very wide web of small sonar devices lying on the bottom of seas and oceans allowing to american military forces to relieve possible marine units.
